What Makes YOU Happy..?
Do we talk enough to each other about what really, really makes us happy? Do we have a hold of and an understanding of what happiness means and what it is to us? Do we forget to stop and actually think about what makes us happy as an individual and instead we get swept up in what the general consensus of what being happy should look like.
Today this post is for us to start thinking about what our happiness looks like. Once you take a moment to reflect and think about what your happiness looks like, you will be more successful at ensuring every day, and every week you are doing things which make you HAPPY. We are the only people that can make a change and we hold the power to make feeling happy an everyday occurrence.
Let's begin with, what is the definition of happiness? The word happy is often used as an umbrella emotion for a multitude of other positive emotions and we actually lose the understanding of happy and instead mistake it for other feelings. Let's see what an expert in the field of happiness describes it as.
Positive psychology researcher Sonja Lyubomirsky elaborates, describing happiness as, “the experience of joy, contentment, or positive well-being, combined with a sense that one’s life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile.”
Wikipedia describes happiness as, “ a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. Happy mental states may also reflect judgements by a person about their overall well-being.”
Many other experts use the term 'subjective well-being'. Which really plays into what we are discussing today, your happiness is subjective to you.
Now we have some varied definitions it's really important to take some time and absorb these meanings and reflect on what is important to you as an individual (subjectively) and what things make you happy. If writing things down works for you (like it does for me!) then take some time to journal some ideas of what makes you happy.
My BIGGEST point for you to take from this though is it doesn't matter at all how large or small these things are. It does not matter if your idea of happiness is completely different to your friends. Happiness does not have to be a huge pay check, a mansion or the latest sports car. But, it is also OK if these things really really are your form of happiness, every one is different! Taking pride in your home can bring you happiness, saving up and working really really hard for your dream car can be your happiness.
It is also important to say that it is OKAY to not be happy all of the time, it is completely normal and human, we have to be careful not to be influenced by things we see or read about on social media or in the news, we can often fall into the trap of thinking everyone else is happy all of the time and always having the time of their life! But remember, that's only a snippet of their life.
Learning about yourself, and what makes you happy is such an empowering tool. It will make you feel stronger and more in control even throughout the unhappier times.
What makes you happy is personal to you and you should try to ensure you are never thinking of other people's judgement in relation to your happiness.
Top Tip: to ensure you're doing YOU and always bringing happiness into your day to day life try writing down 5 things you can easily do which bring you complete happiness. From these things try to always include at least one of them in your day.
Now I'm going to run myself a big bubble bath and enjoy half an hour of happiness and reflection! Never be too busy for your own happiness...
